Do you ever have projects that you really wished you hadn't started or that
you feel so guilty about not finishing that whenever you start something new
you have guilty pangs? Months ago Daisy asked me to make her an outfit for her
baby doll - Bobby. This sounded very straight forward I had already made a
crochet dress and hat for her other baby Millie. I was even provided with a
pattern from her friends Nana who had made a few sets of dolls clothes for
her grandaughter. The pattern was for a jumper and leggings. The jumper had
ribbed cuffs and panels of moss stitch and cable so not an easy knit. I started
off without the doll but was assured that size 1 would fit, I had almost
finished the jumper before the first fitting and it didn't fit! So back to the
beginning, work ripped back and onto size two, by now I hated the pattern and
my moss stitch kept going wrong on the increase rows and I have never been a
fan of cable. So it was ripped back again and I decided to do a plain version,
which I wasn't very happy with. So it won't be a surprise to you all that I
sort of put it away and tried to forget about it. But as you know I see a lot
of Daisy and have been frequently shamed by her enquiries about Bobby and his
outfit - is it nearly finished Nana, when will it be ready Nana and then the
final straw was when she told me she was going to ask Evie's Nana if she could
knit Bobby some clothes.
The bag of hidden knitting was reclaimed and after a few false starts I
worked out where I was up to with the pattern. It really wasn't that bad and
with a bit of determination I have finished it - hurray. I also made
Bobby a little crochet hat with a pompom on top.
I'm not a fan of baby dolls and this one is supposed to be a new born
and it does look very life like - Daisy loves him but I find him a bit spooky.
It was such a relief to give Bobby back and Daisy is thrilled to have him back
home all warm and cosy in his new outfit. I do feel guilty and I really don't understand why it took me so long, as when you see the finished outfit, you will all be thinking what a straight forward piece of knitting what was all the fuss about - I just didn't like it!
bye bye Bobby
Talk soon x
Gosh Bobby is very lifelike..... Poppy my daughter has a Baby Annabel and adores her! xo
ReplyDeleteWell done Sue, I have more WIPs than I'm prepared to admit. My most guilty shame is a quilt I re-started for my daughter months ago....I keep going wrong so I put it away, hoping she would forget about it. She hasn't! Ad whenever I start something new she exclaims "what about my quilt mum."
ReplyDeleteWell done for completing Bobbies outfit. You will have made your granddaughter very happy. Alls well that ends well! X
Aww so cute. The outfit is adorable
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! This post gave me a good laugh! I can totally identify with everything you said, even about the baby doll looking a bit spooky. My first granddaughter just turned one and I started making a Maggie Rabbit doll for her months ago. I have absolutely hated the whole process and stuffed it away in a bag months ago, telling myself I would bring it back out closer to her birthday. Now her birthday has come and gone and I am madly trying to finish it. At least she's too young to know she didn't get her present on time! Your finished doll clothes are very nice, and make the doll look just a bit less spooky. :-)
ReplyDeleteGood job Sue ! One warm and cosy doll, one happy granddaughter.

Sweet - it'll be really loved and enjoyed! My best friend is busy making clothes for my Paddington Bear nursery class mascot. She was a little creeped out by having to keep measure his gusset area too many times. They know each other quite intimately now! x
ReplyDeleteAww least it's done now, I find some dolls spooky to, I'm sure Dasiy is happy with the new dolls clothes

Great job! Pssst - some dolls freak me out too.
ReplyDeleteAw Sue, you do make me smile! Those newborn dolls are creepy, you got that right, and I bet if you we're making that outfit for a 'real' baby, you would have zipped through it and loved every minute of it! In any case, you have done a mighty fine job, and now Bobby is all set for autumn... Chrissie xxx
ReplyDeleteYes, I find some dolls a bit spooky too. So glad you managed to dress Bobby before Evie's nan!
ReplyDeleteCaz xx
Love this! I have WIP's in the cupboard of doom under the stairs. My Mum knitted me one sock for my firstborn over 35 years ago and that was it. Never finished the pair and not even a single sock for my other two babies!
ReplyDeleteWell you did do a lovely job with it in the finish Sue, but I understand every word you're saying on this subject, and I agree with the spookiness part too. Please don't feel guilty, sometimes things are just not right for us at particular times - but they have a way of working out in the finish don't they :) Well done! xoJoy
ReplyDeleteWell done you for persevering with it! I am not a fan of dolls either, so I understand why it wasn't your favourite thing to do. Of course I am in awe of anyone knitting anything, so I think that it is so great that you knitted the outfit!! xx
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of outfits my Grandma would make for my dolls - that dolly is a bit creepy though!
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you! I'm having guilt pangs lately because I started this bag ...to improving my sewing skills, you know sort of a sewing lesson ....well I hate it but I must finish it! I could just throw it into my will finish corner but I just get this guilty feeling.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think the suit is perfect and it doesn't look easy to me at all because I don't know how to knit. I had to have a little giggle where you mentioned Daisy was going to ask her other Nana I bet you got your skates on then....I certainly would have!!
keep well
